Media Molecule, The LittleBigPlanet Team, Is Working on a New IP

Between Dreams and LittleBigPlanet, most assumed that the game’s developers, Media Molecule, would work on a sequel to either game next. But, it appears that this isn’t the case.

According to a recent job listing by Sony, Media Molecule is working on a new IP.

As described in the job description, Sony is looking for a “Principal Programmer” who will spearhead the in-development game’s Art Technology team.

Unfortunately, aside from the standard fare details, the job post doesn’t contain other information regarding Media Molecule’s next game.

What Is Media Molecule’s Next Game?

Media Molecule’s previous history with creative and light-hearted games suggests that its next title will follow a similar theme. Aside from LittleBigPlanet and Dreams, Media Molecule also developed Tearaway and its sequel, Tearaway Unfolded. However, it didn’t have anything to do with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. But, whatever the game will be called, Sony must have liked the concept so much that it decided to keep the studio around to see it come to fruition.

The reports from earlier this year confirmed that Sony nearly shuttered the England-based studio. Instead, it chose to shut down London Studio as part of its most recent round of cost-cutting measures and layoffs.

This positive development for the award-winning developers comes after it let go of a huge chunk of its workforce in October 2023 shortly after it ended support for Dreams just a month earlier to focus on its latest project.

Given the details contained in the job listing, fans shouldn’t expect to hear more about the Sony first-party studio’s next game until sometime in the future.

Media Molecule’s history and nature as a Sony-owned development studio suggest that the incoming game will be exclusive to a PlayStation platform when it comes out.

In the meantime, PlayStation owners can still play Dreams. The video game creation system is still active and playable after Media Molecule ended live support. Dreams is available to play on PlayStation 4 and PSVR.
