Tsushima leopard cat returned to the wild for the first time after training at Ministry of the Environment facility

April 22, 2024 19:41 Kyodo News

In order to prevent the extinction of the Tsushima leopard cat, a national natural monument, on the 22nd, the Ministry of the Environment released Hikari, a male cat that was rescued after a traffic accident and trained to be reintroduced into the wild, into the mountains of Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture. This is the first time that individuals have been trained and released at the Tsushima Leopard Cat Wild Acclimation Station (in the same city), which was established by the government between 2012 and 2014 to protect and breed the Tsushima leopard cat, which was feared to disappear from the wild due to environmental deterioration.

Hikari, who was released, is estimated to be one year old and weighs approximately 3 kg. On the 22nd, she was kept in a pet cage and arrived at a forest full of trees. She gingerly poked her head out of her cage and looked around her before she sprinted up the cliff.

The ministry will attach a transmitter to the animal's collar and follow it for about a year.
