Overwatch 2 Mythic Skins Cost as Much as a New Game

Blizzard Entertainment is changing how it monetizes Overwatch 2.

With Overwatch 2 Season 10 now live, Blizzard is no longer locking new heroes behind a paywall. The game’s 40th hero, Venture, is free for all to play. In addition to this, Blizzard is introducing multiple new currency types, including “Mythic Prisms.” This currency is exclusively for the game’s most expensive cosmetics, mythic-tier skins.

As per Blizzard’s official blog post, Mythic Prisms are available at the in-game store per 10, 50, and 100 bundles at $9.99, $39.99, and $79.99, respectively.

As per the usual with freemium games, you can’t buy just the right amount of currency you want for an in-game cosmetic.

In Overwatch 2’s case, the most expensive Mythic skins will cost you 80 Mythic Prisms. This means that Level 4 of Mercy’s new Vengeance mythic skin will cost you at least $63 if you buy the $39.99 Mythic Prism bundles twice. It’s roughly the same amount if you buy the $79.99 Mythic Prism bundle. Either way, you’ll have 20 Mythic Prisms left over. Finally, it totals to $79.92 if you buy the $9.99 Mythic Prism bundle eight times.

Obviously, it’s a lot of money for an in-game cosmetic. For the same price, you can get a new game for the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S/X. However, there’s a kicker: you can get a Mythic skin for completing the seasonal premium battle pass.

For $10, Overwatch 2 players can purchase an 80-tier premium battle pass. It will pay out 80 Mythic Prisms if you play enough to level it up to level 78. It’s exactly enough to get a fully upgraded mythic skin. Alternatively, you can spend 50 Mythic Prisms for a base-level mythic skin and spend the rest on mythic skin upgrades.

How to Unlock Mythic Skins in Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 Mythic Skins are locked behind a paywall. You’ll need to buy enough Mythic Prisms (50, at least) to get one.

Every Mythic skin from Season 1 through 7 is available for purchase as of the time of writing. Grand Beast Orisa, the Season 8 mythic skin, is currently vaulted until Season 11. The same goes for Ancient Caller Moira, which won’t be available again until Season 12.

For the Season 10 mythic skin, Vengeance Mercy, you’ll have until the end of the season to unlock it via the premium battle pass or by buying it directly. Afterwards, Blizzard will vault it for two seasons. This means it will remain unavailable until Season 13.

In any case, the current monetization structure of Overwatch 2 means you can’t get more than one mythic skin each season using the premium battle pass.
