Initially they were quite unpopular with the locals for spoiling the view, much like Eiffel Tower when it was completed. A popular joke was that they look like cardboard boxes that Empire State building and Chrysler building came in.
However they became synonymous with the city and featured in pretty much every movie and TV show set in Manhattan during the 80s and 90s.
