Have you tried just not getting sick?  What about not being poor?  Medical debt caused bankruptcy is totally normal and cool (don't look at other similar countries plz), and you should just pull yourself up by your bootstraps!

I have extreme anxiety discussing anything with my doctor for fear of an outlandish bill.   I've gone to see a referred specialist and saw a bill large enough that I cancelled my followup and figured if it's really a problem it'll just get worse and I'll deal with it then.  I have insurance, I have a good job, I still worry about an accident or medical diagnosis that wipes away my life savings and puts my family on the street.  It's absolutely crazy that this is "normal".

Lucky you didn't have the $2k ride in the ambulance, of which insurers only pay $800 because none of the ambulances are "in-network", as if you have ability when calling 911 to only request "in-network" response teams.
