On April 1, 1974, in Sitka, Alaska, locals woke to what seemed like a volcanic eruption at Mount Edgecumbe. A Coast Guard pilot investigating the smoke found a pile of burning tires with "APRIL FOOL" written in the snow, a prank by local Oliver “Porky” Bickar. He had informed the FAA and police, but not the Coast Guard, leading to the prank's early discovery yet widespread coverage and acclaim.
