Looks like a Sopwith Camel.

Aviators of the time always said, semi-seriously, it offered three crosses: Wooden cross, Red Cross, or Victoria Cross. They were very unforgiving, but could outfly anything else in the sky.

Thank you for sharing. My grandfather fought here in France where I am now living and never thought I would be! He marched in the Veterans Day parades every year in the US, proudly wear his uniform. That war was a hell. Glad to know his story you shared!

How much later did he drown? Like 5 minutes after crash or 50 years?
