Capcom may be breaking its piggy banks for the development of Resident Evil 9. The game, not yet announced, would have the biggest budget in the series' history, according to leaker Dusk Golem. The insider, well known in the game community, revealed the information on a Discord channel. According to him, the title has been costly for the Japanese publisher as it is the biggest (in terms of hours of gameplay) game in the history of the franchise. It is worth mentioning that the development of Resident Evil 9 would have started in 2018, but Capcom would only plan to release it in 2025 — if this is confirmed, it would be the longest production period for an IP game.Dusk Golem states that the game would close the trilogy that began with Resident Evil 7: biohazard, but would not be a direct sequel to Resident Evil Village. Finally, recent leaks suggested that the story of RE 9 will take place in “a haunted western city”. In it, players will encounter “mythical creatures”.Despite being accurate on several other occasions, Dusk Golem is not an official source of information. It's worth waiting for Capcom to talk about Resident Evil 9 before creating any expectations.[Source: Gaming Insider

This is not necessarily good news. Survival horror is still a fairly niche genre, and historically publishers will force them to have "broader appeal" to get a return on investment on this larger budget. This means downplaying the horror and upping the action. It happened with RE6. It happened with Dead Space 3. It happened with Evil Within 2.

The track record is not good.

Hopefully RE9 would be an exception.

Shocking: A triple A game has a larger budget than the last one in the series.

Let me know when the budget shrinks, THAT would be something unusual.

Oh oh no no. Remember when they said this before RE6 came out? Still a fun coop game packed with content but lets hope they don’t do a REtread of 6.
