Actually, he might just be hearing things that are too soft for human ears to hear. He is trying to wait for a perfect time to chase the noise. That being said, your house is probably haunted.
Not to make this post heavier than it needs to be but I did want to tell you that my dog did this too for a few months & then it turned into him pressing his head against random objects for minutes at a time. Long story short, after a few more months of this behavior he started having seizures & we took him in for scans & he had a brain tumor. The vet said the long staring & head pressing were all signs of a seizure and/or tumor growth.
I'm not trying to say this is the issue here but I did want to warn you to keep an eye on your cute pup's behavior & get them to a vet if you notice any other abnormal signs that you've never seen before. Again, I'm sorry to post something negative on your funny picture but I did just want to warn you.
