I thought the observation deck was closed on 9/11?

I wanted to go see The World Trade Center the first time I went to NYC when I was 16 in 1998. My parents said we didn’t have time and the towers would still be there the next time we came back.

My kids were there sight seeing one week before the 11th. We are so, so lucky. I have a photo very similar to this, but I haven’t been able to look at it. We lived in Brooklyn then. I have photos from the roof - the sky filled with black smoke - I didn’t even understand what I was photographing - then I did, and ran to their school. Chaos. We walked home with burnt tatters of paper raining down from the sky. At night with all of our neighbours we walked to the firehouse to donate what we could and be there for the men who had lost half of their squad. One of the firemen stood on top of their truck and waved a tattered American flag, singed at the edges. It doesn’t seem that long ago.
