This picture has been on my bucket list for years. Prior to taking this picture I did some research on what exactly makes these trees so special and how they have adapted to live so long. Their thick and resinous wood allows them to be resilient to extreme environmental changes as well as combat insects/pests.

Initially I planned this image with PhotoPills and decided to position my camera so that the Milky Way would rise directly behind this ghoulish tree. My original process was to do a blue hour blend but after collaborating with another photographer, we light painted the tree using his flash. We experimented lighting the tree from different angles until we landed on this one. I used one exposure for the subject and foreground, then another exposure for the night sky. I used my Nikon Z7 with a 14-24 /2.8 lens.
