India among top actors for foreign interference in Canada: national security adviser

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's national security adviser says India is among the top sources of foreign interference in Canada.

Jody Thomas says "a number of state actors and non-state proxies" are conducting foreign interference in Canada, and at a conference last week she listed three countries that Ottawa has frequently cited: China, Russia and Iran.

But Thomas also specifically mentioned India, a country the Liberals highlighted in their Indo-Pacific strategy as a priority for establishing closer economic and scientific ties.

Federal agencies have in recent years warned that India may try to influence communities in Canada, and Thomas's predecessor suggested rogue elements in the Indian government sought to embarrass Trudeau during his visit that year.

On occasion India has argued that elements in Canada are behind interference in Indian domestic affairs, particularly a separatist movement led by some Sikhs that at times has involved violence.

The NDP has often cited India as a source of foreign interference, arguing Canada should limit its ties to the country over human rights concerns.

Canada has always protected Khalistani terrorists who murdered 329 people in air India bombing. India should never forget that. https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/historycultures/departments/history/events/2023/terrorism-and-memory-the-1985-air-india-bombing-and-its-victims.aspx

This news from a literally off hand comment, coupled with the parade float debacle in a random Canadian town making international news really makes you wonder if there is a concerted effort right now by a third party to drive a wedge between Canada and India.

Realistically that float should have never made it past the local news, and this comment should have been one reported but headlined as being on the same level as China is absurd and feels driven.

The article is...just super vague?

I'd assume India would want to interfere because of presence of Khalistani supporters in the country...but besides that, I don't see why New Delhi would care much. It doesn't have much interest in spying on the US or the West in general.

There's just not enough in it to really say anything.

Also Canada has...a lot of foreign interference in general apparently, probably something they need to work on.
