Its hard to forget the launch of Battlefield 2042. Players slammed the game for being unfinished and in some cases, simply unplayable. A game dev that worked at DICE for 12 years has shared some problems the team experienced while the game was being made.

Battlefield 2042 didn’t sit well with critics or players. The latest entry to the franchise received a 68 on Metacritic (based on 74 critic reviews) and has “mostly negative” reviews on Steam.

DICE developer outlines some Battlefield 2042 woes

Former Senior Software Engineer at DICE, Joakim Bodin, explained in a recent tweet that the game had “many iterations” and “the deadline never changed much.” As a result of these factors, Bodin says Battlefield 2042 “never stood much of a chance being great at launch.”

Its no secret that the game’s direction changed many times during development. You may remember leaks pointing towards Battlefield 2042 being a battle royale, having major weather events and so much more. After launch, it was revealed that those were internal pitches that were being explored which could be the “many iterations” Bodin is referring to.

Despite difficulties, Bodin is “proud though to have pushed hard to have this game have full cross play, progression and (mostly) commerce. It’s online systems will serve future titles well” We’ll have to wait and see what those future titles will involve and how the franchise and DICE devs will bounce back from Battlefield 2042.

The definition of “if it ain’t broke….”.

I’m all for game innovation, it’s the lifeblood of the industry in many ways, but when you have a pre established point of difference maybe stick to your guns instead of making changes to follow the herd.

Major miss-step here.
