I remember the first time I met my future Mother-in-law. We arrived late and they had already gone to bed.
At 6 O'clock the next morning I awoke smelling cinnamon rolls. Walked into the kitchen and introduced myself to a Southern lady dressed in a robe with some kinda wrapping around her hair to protect her hairdo?
She had made from scratch cinnamon rolls, biscuits, grits, country ham, fresh sausage, red-eye gravy, hash browns and a stack of sunny side up eggs. She had grated some red wax hoop cheese, chopped some scallions from her garden and asked me if I would like some leftover shrimp from last nights boil in my grits. My FIL had already left for work.
I wanted to hug her right then.
Fast forward 40 or so years and she was living with us while dying from cancer and she still would get up before daylight and cook like this.
I miss her, she was beyond nice. "chopping onions right now".
