I was born and raised around this area and sometimes you can just walk around at night and not need any light whatsoever because the strikes nearby completely light up the sky. The tl;dr is the basin has the Andes to the South and the Sierra de Perija to the left, coupled with warm moisture from the Caribbean in Lake Maracaibo it makes the perfect conditions for this to happen.
