PlayStation-backed studio Deviation Games has been hit with layoffs, with sources telling VGC as many as 90 members of staff may have been affected.

Several now ex-employees of Deviation have announced their departure on social media, with software engineer Kyle Perras writing that “my studio recently ran into a difficult situation and was forced to make a number of layoffs which I was a part of.”

VGC has reached out to both Sony and Deviation for comment and will update this story should we receive a response.

In September last year, one of Deviation Games co-founders, chief creative officer Jason Blundell left the studio.Â

The studio is developing an original IP which will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Deviation was reportedly “over 100 strong” in 2021 when it signed the deal with Sony. At the time of writing, the studio is not currently advertising any open roles.

“We’re drawing on what we’ve learned over our collective decades making games, but we’re also out to make something fresh and brimming with innovation like you’ve never experienced before,” Anthony told the PlayStation Blog in 2021.

“We’re not afraid to say that our ambitions are super high: we’re setting out to make a huge, content-rich game with a focus on a lot of action and a lot of energy, but let’s leave it at that for now and hopefully it won’t be long before we can share more.”

I was interested in seeing their game because they had really recruited a lot of veterans, but the co-founder's departure was already a bad sign.

Yes, the studio is now closed. It has always seemed like there was more to that ever since Blundell left and there was radio silence from the studio and no explanation of why he left.

In the past few weeks we saw...

Dreams 10-year plan abandoned and key figures leaving Pixel Opus shutting it's door after it's in-development project with Sony Pictures got cancelled Final Strike Games laying off 40% of the staff after Sony cancelled a AAA project that was 3 years into development Deviation laying off 90 devs, most likely because their project was cancelled

It's just sad for everyone involved. So many lost their job. So many games that potentially were good but never launch. So many years wasted on projects that ultimately get binned because suits were not satisfied.
