Radio operators had a high casualty rate. That antenna made you easy to spot, and the enemy knew that killing the radio operator meant no air or artillery support. I wonder if what he's really upset about is having to wear the giant "kill me flag" again.

My grandfather served in that war. He never talked about it, but he let me interview him on his experience in the war for a history project in high school. Probably the most generous person I've ever known. I hate that I have no idea what I did with those tapes.

My father was a radio operator during the Korean War. When I was about 8 -10 years old I asked him about it and he started to tell me about an engagement that was pretty intense. He said the rushing soldiers came at them and they reminded him of cornstalks on the move... to which the immature me left out a giggle. He got pissed and would never talk about anything from his experiences again. I have always regretted that moment.
