I unexpectedly happened upon this guy early in the morning. He was dancing around the tree looking for food, occasionally enlarging some holes, occasionally eating. I loved the colors in the background and the contrast he made with it. Add in the fact that I never realized they had a tongue like that and it made for a photo I really loved.

Pileated woodpeckers are beautiful birds, and this is a great photo. I had a pair behind my motorhome while hosting at Red Top Mountain. Their size is amazing compared to a regular woodpecker, in fact they are the largest woodpecker species in the Northern Hemisphere. I would have loved to have gotten such a detailed photo of the ones that I saw - what kind of equipment did you use?
