I wanted a dark, moody feel as night set in. I wanted the sky and headlights reflecting off the rails, in part to lead your eyes into the image. I shot on a tripod so I could slow the shutter way down. This was shot on a Nikon D4 with a 50mm f/1.4 at 1/4s, f/2, and ISO 400. I closed down the aperture by one stop because this particular lens has some abberations on points of light when wide open, plus closing down even just a little bit gives the "starry" look to point light sources.

It's brilliant how the track is slit all the way to the bottom of the image. I guess you had to get the timing just right so the combination of what natural light remained and the train's light produced this effect.

Awesome pic, man! It instantly made me think of this scene from The Assassination of Jesse James: https://youtu.be/yBCdekTEvmo?t=134
