It makes perfect sense though, they had radio technology back then and portable radios. The next logical conclusion to the telephone would be be a portable one, and as they had television and cameras that can record, why wouldn't we be able to transmit video footage of ourselves to someone while talking?
This isn't a time traveler, but simply a smart man who understood the technology of his time well and it's potential.
