OP - you should look into a murphy bed. If you can build that you can build a murphy bed. If you're trying to keep costs down, skip the spring kits / pistons for raising / lowering it and use a piano hinge.
I've built 5 or 6 of them now and they are huge space savers and you still get all the utility of a bed :) It would take up the same space as the hammock when it is closed (as far as useable wall space).
