Every day, except for Saturdays and Sundays, Hester Appenzeller rode the same route to Francine's Market, where she purchased a dozen petunias, one-quarter kilogram of freshly-churned butter, and checked her post.
On Mondays, Mrs. Erstwhile, the widowed pensioner, would put a fresh-baked boysenberry pie on the sill to cool and wave laconically at Hester Appenzeller. On Tuesdays, Mr. Ibrahim would open the window and take the air before his weekly accordion lesson. He, too, would wave to Hester. Wednesdays were for the Hollis Twins, who took turns during a break in their cello lessons to fly a kite outside the window. Thursdays and Fridays were uneventful.
Today was Tuesday, but Mr. Ibrahim wasn't at his window taking the air. He was on his way to the train station, where he planned to commit murder against one of the passengers due to arrive on the 10:15 train.
