Deep inside the pipe organ at St. Marks in Auckland, New Zealand.

This is part of a series I'm working on to make small spaces seem massive. There are two things in macro photography that signal to us that something is small, even if it's photographed extremely close. One is a shallow depth of field (blurry background), and the other is focal compression (usually made obvious by a lack of perspective and leading lines). I use a couple of techniques to eliminate these. The first is getting everything in focus. It's impossible with a single shot, even with the exotic lens I used that goes all the way to f/40... I take dozens, sometimes hundreds, of photos, each focused a little further away than the last. Then run them all through some amazing software called Helicon Focus which combines the sharp parts of each frame and discards the rest. I also use wide-angle macro lenses (24mm or wider). These give wonderful leading lines and a great sense of depth that would normally be associated with larger spaces. This would have been an impossible shot without the Laowa 24mm periprobe lens, a long thin periscope. It allowed me to place the lens in a very tight space that was far too small for the body of the camera. Lumix S1R Laowa 24mm Periprobe Lens Godox AD600 pro and AD200 pro lights 1/250, ISO 100, f/20 52 photos focus stacked More from this series in my profile or at www.architectureinmusic.com

Thanks for the meticulously perfected shot and description of what it took to accomplish this. Bravo. Well done.
