The United States has approved a potential sale of missiles and related equipment to Taiwan worth $619 million to be used on its F-16 fighter jets, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The approval by the State Department and formal notification to Congress the same day are almost certain to inflame tensions with Beijing, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory to be brought under its control by force if necessary.

An official at the department said Taiwan will use its funds to purchase the weapons and stressed the approval is in line with the Taiwan Relations Act, which allows Washington to assist the island in maintaining a sufficient self-defense capability.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a press conference Thursday that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan are "a serious violation of the one-China principle," and Beijing has been firmly opposed to them in a consistent manner.

China urges the United States to stop creating tension in the Taiwan Strait and says that it will continue taking resolute and forceful measures to firmly defend its sovereignty and security interests, she said.

The contractors for the munitions and equipment will be Raytheon Missiles and Defense and Lockheed Martin, according to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

"The proposed sale will help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance and economic progress in the region," the agency said.

Am I being paranoid or does it seem like the world is gearing up for a major global war in the next 5-10 years?

might be a dumb question but where does the US get most of those "arms"? Do we make them locally? I assume they mean like guns and not vehicles/aerospace
