War truly is hell.

Some were traitors who sided with the occupiers to be on the better side of the socioeconomic fence.

MANY were victims of at best coercion and at worst rape at the hands of the Germans, or prostitutes sincerely desparate for money from whoever would pay.

Both were tarred with the same brush.

My grandfather lived through the Nazi occupation in Denmark, and I’ve heard so many stories of what he experienced, liberation day included. The day of liberation they had a parade to celebrate. Every woman who slept with nazis or was sympathetic to them was stripped naked, shaved, and marched down the road for the public to spit on, throw things at, whatever, straight to the jailhouse.

He told me he didn’t remember seeing any guns during the parade. But when 2 nazi soldiers who didn’t make it out with the rest were spotted running along rooftops trying to escape during the parade, he heard more guns than he could count go off. He described the soldiers as “Swiss cheese” by the time the shooting stopped. He remembered vividly one fell from the roof, and a woman had removed her boot to smash his face in with. Apparently she had a child killed by the Gestapo.

I never heard my grandfather curse once in my life until he was telling me about going to a soccer match in Europe and coming across a group of skinheads. He immediately started to turn red with rage just telling the story and the words “those fucking nazi pieces of shit” spewed from his mouth.

It’s hard to understand the treatment of people unless you were there. It’s also why using the term “Nazi” isn’t to be taken lightly. For whatever reason, the word is thrown around so carelessly these days. To someone like my grandfather who watched them murder people in cold blood on the street, it was an insult that meant more than any other and represented a level of human that wasn’t human at all.
