Not saying this is the case by any means, but when I quit drinking I always needed to be sipping on something sweet (the fixation to drink stays for a while) and opted for diet soda (and iced tea) so I wouldn't be consuming tons of sugar. I've heard similar stories of people doing the same with smoking, etc.

I work for Pepsi. These were given away to all employees as they are out of season and will expire within a few weeks.
