Far Cry 7 and Far Cry Multiplayer in Development at Ubisoft

Insider Gaming sources have revealed that two new Far Cry games are in development at Ubisoft, one presumed to be Far Cry 7 as a single-player experience and the other to be a multiplayer-only title.

Details on what both games entail are slim, but it’s understood that the titles were intended to be one game at one point, but separated to become two separate projects early on in development. The game was believed to be known as Project Talisker under the helm of Day Hay until both games became their own separate entities after his departure to Blizzard Entertainment.

Far Cry 7 is now internally referred to as Project Blackbird, whereas the multiplayer experience is known as Project Maverick – both projects are believed to have heavy involvement from Ubisoft Montreal.

Two sources, who have requested to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak about company information have said that details are still slim and Maverick has changed numerous times in the past year or so. However, Insider Gaming understands that the game is pitched as being set in the Alaskan wilderness and is currently an extraction-based shooter with mechanics such as permadeath, a backpack system, contracts, and more.

Believe it or not, such an idea for a game could have been floating around for a long time, too. A survey in 2015 asked players to select their preferred locations for a possible Far Cry follow-up (thanks PCgamer), with the least ‘out there’ setting being “A Far Cry game in remote Alaska about surviving extreme wilderness”. Interestingly enough, survival against the extreme wilderness (weather, wildlife, etc.) seems to be more of a priority over worrying about other players.

Screenshots of the game provided to Insider Gaming under the request that they don’t go public show lootable chests, extraction zones, and more.

Fewer details are known about Far Cry 7 – or whatever the next mainline game will be called – but a similar setting to the multiplayer experience could be possible as both titles originated from the same game.

It’s understood that the games are still at least a couple of years away, with a tentative scheduled release date of fall 2025. Despite the internal deadline though, the publisher’s inconsistency with meeting such deadlines could suggest the game is even further out than that.

Ubisoft was contacted before the publication of this report and said “We don’t comment on rumours or speculation”.

To conclude and dive into the rabbit hole of possible hints at what a Far Cry multiplayer game could look like, it’s possible that the game could include characters from past games. Last year, Juan Cortez voice actor, Alex Fernandez, tweeted a new image of himself in a recording booth with the background voiceline saying “Enemy spy activated Sonar Vision. Wish we had that back when I was KGB.” – of course, such a line could be for the upcoming mainline game as Far Cry 6 DLC has concluded, but that line has very multiplayer vibes about it. What do you think?

Ubisoft reports that through 2014, lifetime sales of the Far Cry franchise has exceeded 20 million units. By September 2019, the series had accumulated a combined 50 million units in sales.

Nooo? Really? They're making another Far Cry? Soon you'll be telling me there will be another Ass Creed too.

It better not follow the same route 6 went. Skilled gear, special ammo and weapons that are mostly useless, bland story they had to make up for with one famous actor that wasn't even a great antagonist, anticlimactic ending, cringy factions, bring back 2 3 and 4s style

I'm suprised we didn't get a Far Cry 6.5 that reuses assets from 6.

Far Cry Blood Dragon came from Far Cry 3

Far Cry Primal came from Far Cry 4

Far Cry New Dawn came from Far Cry 5

I really expected a spinoff title for 6 as well, at least before we get news on 7. Probably for the best, I'm tired of Far Cry Games that are just a bunch of old assets
