AMELIA, La. (WAFB) - The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office said an “unknown possible explosive device” that prompted an evacuation back on Saturday, Jan. 21, was actually an egg.

The potential threat prompted the evacuation of Barrow Street in Amelia between Lake Palourde Road and Duhon Boulevard. However, residents were eventually allowed to return home and were told there was no threat to the public.

According to SMPSO, 911 contacted dispatch around 11 a.m. about a call that the “unknown possible explosive device” was found at a home in Amelia. Officials said deputies rushed to the scene and were joined by members of the Amelia Volunteer Fire Department.

Investigators said the home’s owner claimed to have received threats against their life and a video of an object wrapped in a bandana that had been placed under the home.

Law enforcement located the object under the home and discovered it was an egg, according to SMPSO.

Authorities said the evacuation was made out of an abundance of caution and in concordance with law enforcement protocol.

Who has that kind of money where they can leave an egg like that?

If you leave an egg alone long enough, it can explode.

This will cause an evacuation.

They acted completely reasonably.
