Honoring a man who advanced civil rights for black Americans and at the same time honoring a man who fought a war to keep black Americans as slaves.

I grew up in Virginia. I was too young to understand the implications of living nearby to a Robert E. Lee named school since, during history classes, we were all taught that he was the greatest American hero and only fought to preserve the rights of states [to own slaves]. The last time I heard about this holiday, it was called "Lee Jackson King Day."

Sometimes, you have to stand really far back from what you think is normal before you start to see the oddness of where you once were.
