That has to be one of the most photographed objects in the planet. With good reason.

I was in San Francisco earlier this year to see a show. My flight got in around 9am and the show wasn’t until that evening, so I booked an Alcatraz tour, but didn’t have any other defined plans in between, other than getting a good look at the Golden Gate Bridge. On the ferry back from Alcatraz, I overheard two woman talking about the bridge and one said to the other, “Have you ever walked the length of it? It’s been ages since I last did that.”

Well that thought hadn’t even occurred to me, but that quickly became my new plan. I walked from one end to the other and back again. I’m not great with heights, so parts of the walk made me quite nervous, but I pushed through and it took a little less than an hour. I don’t use this term lightly, but it was absolutely thrilling. The fog rolled in, and the tallest parts of the bridge would vanish right in front of you. I’ve never seen anything like it. And the bridge itself is such a beautiful piece of architecture. It was amazing to walk across every foot of it and marvel at the engineering that went into creating something that is so much a part of American iconography.

I’m so glad I inadvertently heard that conversation. It might not seem like a big deal to people who live in the area, but it was one of my favorite things I did in 2022.
