For the last few years there was one photograph I've always been chasing: a big, mature whitetail buck mid-jump. I had witnessed it several times in various areas and settings over the years, but due to the scene, setting, or not being prepared, I just couldn't seal the deal and lay down the shutter quick enough. I'm proud to say that I've FINALLY captured what I consider to be my dream shot - this wide and wicked looking whitetail buck mid-leap over a wire fence.
The only reason I was ready for this photograph was due to 2 smaller whitetail bucks that made the jump a few minutes before he did, and even then he stood on the other side hesitant to leap. I had my focus ring locked for a good 5 minutes just waiting for him to go - I was NOT going to miss this opportunity. Funny enough, those two smaller bucks started sparring no more than 40 yards from me, and that would have made a great photograph too, but I was determined to keep my eyes on the prize.
Sure enough, he reared back and hopped over with more grace than is expected from a 200+ lb animal.
I am not one to boast too much, and normally I'm very self-critical, but I have such a sense of satisfaction checking this off of my photography bucket list.
I also have more photographs from this trip to Texas on my Instagram @Dom.iwc if you're into deer photography. Happy to share these moments with you guys!
I have a website if you guys want to see more of my work. Appreciate you all, and appreciate the laughs you've given me today with all of the nutsack comments 😂
