Pre-production work on the sequel to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 will not begin until sometime in the year 2023.

Speaking during the 3rd Quarter earnings conference, CD Projekt president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński was questioned regarding the time frame of the development of a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Kiciński responded by stating that the studio expects to enter the pre-production phase of development for the sequel by 2023.

According to Kiciński, following the release of the expansion “Phantom Liberty,” the studio would begin work on the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077. There will first be a research and concept stage, which isn’t yet formally referred to as “pre-production.” Pre-production for the development of the sequel will begin once the preliminary concept is done.

Additionally, Kiciński revealed plans to produce on more content across other mediums after the success of Cyberpunk Edgerunners. However, the developer did not confirm a second season for the Netflix series. He added that the success of Cyberpunk Edgerunners continues to have a positive impact on sales of Cyberpunk 2077, as the game has been selling well across all platforms.

Previously, it was reported that Cyberpunk 2077 had overtaken Elden Ring as the most played single-player game in the top games by concurrent player count on Steam. A quick look at the Steam concurrent player count charts reveals that CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 is now the most played single-player game on the platform, pushing ahead of From Software’s Elden Ring.

Other games above Elden Ring in the list include Path of Exile, Monster Hunter Rise, DayZ, PAYDAY 2, Hearts of Iron IV, and MIR. Cyberpunk 2077 currently has a comfortable 10k user lead over Elden Ring. The recently released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Netflix series may have boosted interest in the game, especially since content from the show has been added to it in update 1.6. The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners update will allow players to equip new items from the anime series.

Some indie-made games are getting so good that it's making these games struggle to compete. Also, management releasing games extra early is getting worse.

I'm going to try my best not to support this terrible business practice.
