Herschel Walker Blames Wife's 'Awful Genes' for Son Being an Ugly Baby

U.S. Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker jokingly blamed his wife's "awful genes" for the fact his son Christian Walker was an "ugly" baby.

The comments have gained renewed attention online after Twitter account PatriotTakes shared clips of a talk Herschel Walker delivered to military personnel and civilian staff at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

PatriotTakes, which describes itself as "researchers monitoring and exposing right-wing extremism," noted in its Twitter thread that the comments were from the event in 2019.

The video of Walker discussing his newborn son had been viewed more than 200,000 times as of early Friday morning.

Christian Walker, who is now 23 years old, strongly criticized his father in a series of social media posts and videos ahead of the midterm elections on November 8, and accused him lying and of being an absent father.

The Republican is now facing a runoff election in the Georgia Senate race against Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock on December 6.

In his 2019 remarks at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Walker described his son as a "smart kid" who was "book-wise, extremely smart-streetwise, dumb as a brick."

Walker said that he had helped to deliver Christian and described him as being "ugly" when he was born.

"When I delivered him, he had this long old head," Walker said. "No, seriously. He looked like an alien. I told my wife, 'Have your parents got some awful genes and stuff?'"

"You said, no matter how ugly your child is, you think he's pretty," he went on. "So they clean Christian up and stuff, and they clean him up, and I put the cap on top of his crown [...] and I think, he's not that bad."

Walker went on to relate how he had seen a newborn baby girl next to Christian whom he described as "beautiful," but added that "normally little kids are ugly when they're really born at first."

"I'm looking at Christian, and I'm looking at her, and I go, wow, I'm gonna slide her over a little and stuff because everybody's gonna come to that window and go 'Wow, that's a beautiful little girl' and then they're gonna look at Christian Walker—'Woah, X-Files, like he's an alien," Walker said.

In another video clip of the event shared by PatriotTakes, Walker said he had "rounded" Christian's head "every day" and that it not only made him look like Walker's side of the family but also "made him smart."

A 2019 news report from Joint Base Lewis-McChord's public affairs division focused on Walker's comments about bullying and noted that his talk took place on September 10 as part of National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month.

That report also noted Walker's status as a Heisman Trophy winner. A former football star, Walker was not involved in politics at that time. A full video of his remarks is still available on YouTube and has racked up about 47,000 views.

Newsweek has asked the Walker campaign for comment.
