There were 243,000 mariners that served in the war. And 9,521 perished while serving—a higher proportion of those killed than any other branch of the US military. 733 ships were sunk by U Boats. That's almost 25%.

Retired Sailor here. Please thank him for me. These guys were neglected for so long. It was unfair it took so long for Merchant Marines get veteran status. If anything they risked more due to not really being able to protect themselves.

The Naval Armed Guard Sailors assigned to MM ships were not properly equipped and it was considered to be the worst assignment you could get in the Navy. They knew just how dangerous it truly was. I respect the hell out of everyone who served on a MM ship. God bless your Grandad.

The merchant marines get ripped on a lot by the other branches, but they suffered tremendously during WWII. Wouldn’t want their job when the war broke out. Think Torpedos 😳
