Muslim women burning a hijab in Kerala to show solidarity with the anti-hijab protest in Iran.

By Shibimol KG: Muslim women in Kerala burnt a hijab on Sunday, November 6 in solidarity with the anti-hijab movement in Iran. The incident took place during a seminar which was organised by the Kerala Yuktivadi Sangam.

The seminar, titled “Fanos-Science and Free thinking,” was held in Kozhikode prior to another seminar scheduled to be held in Malappuram next month. As part of the event, Muslim women burnt a hijab in solidarity with the anti-hijab movement going on in Iran.

Six Muslim women from the organisation led the move to burn hijabs. This is the first such incident of hijab burning reported in India.

The activists raised slogans and displayed placards in solidarity with the women protesting against the enforcement of hijab in Iran.

Yuktivadi Sangam is a national organisation and such seminars are organised every year on the topic of free thinking.

People from various religions, including Muslim women who are part of the organisation, took part in the event. The hijab burning, inspired by similar incidents in Iran, took place on Sunday in Kerala’s Kozhikode.

yes Kerala is more progressive and has the highest literacy rate but there still could be consequences for these women. If you are ever in that part of the world I still recommend a visit!

Kerala is pretty progressive. I guess it's more symbolic

I guess it’s sending a message but doesn’t make sense as hijab is not mandatory in Kerala or any other part of India.
