Early Gameplay Footage Of Hideo Kojima’s Overdose Leaks Online

Death Stranding was released in 2019 to much fanfare and was one of the most anticipated titles of the time. That isn’t surprising since it was famed auteur Hideo Kojima’s new game after leaving the umbrella of Konami, where he had made the Metal Gear Solid series for much of his career.

Kojima was supposed to end his long stint with MGS, his well-beyond-the-years baby, through the next Silent Hill game, Silent Hill. A playable teaser dubbed P.T was released which received critical acclaim and inspired many modern horror games such as the recent entries in the Resident Evil series starting from Resident Evil 7.

This would not come to fruition since Kojima and his company, Kojima Productions left Konami, the details of which are still unknown. Many were shocked but intrigued as he was finally free to make any game he wanted, and impatiently awaited his next project.

However, later it was revealed that Hideo Kojima was working on a horror game dubbed Project Overdose, with Margaret Qualley having a starring role in it. She had previously portrayed the character Mama in Death Stranding.

Now, eXputer has come across a recording of Overdose’s gameplay that has somehow leaked online on Streamable. The link has since been taken down, however, another person has uploaded the video to their YouTube channel. It’s pretty much clear that we’re looking at Overdose here just by the character design of the woman in the gameplay sequence, which happens to be Margaret Qualley.

The character can be seen wandering the dark, lonely halls with some enemies appearing occasionally that seem to be of the supernatural sort.

In the end, the camera closes up on the character’s face and a game over the screen is shown, with the heading “Overdose” and “A Hideo Kojima” game.

What’s interesting to note is that the recording is not from within the game but rather recorded off of a phone. It was previously rumoured that Kojima was in a partnership with Xbox to make a cloud-based game.

Hi everyone, this is Hideo Kojima. Yes, there is a game I have always wanted to make. It’s a completely new game, one that no one has ever experienced or seen before. I’ve waited very long for the day when I could finally start to create it. With Microsoft’s cutting edge cloud technology and the change in the industry’s trend, it has now become possible to challenge myself to make this never-before-seen concept. It may take some time, but I’m looking forward to teaming up with Xbox Game Studios and hope to bring you some exciting news in the future! Thank you!”

Kojima announced this partnership in a video message at Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022. According to Kojima, the title would utilize Microsoft’s cloud technology. The visuals are indeed impressive in the leaked video and so, it may be speculated that the game is running on a phone by using said tech.

In various instances in the leaked video as well there appears a red, interactive dot. Such forms of interaction are aplenty in mobile games or those with touch controls anyway. This lends further credence to the speculation to the speculation that Overdose may be a mobile game.

Moreover, it is noticeable that the player of the game is the woman shown in the bottom left corner, and throughout the duration of the video, the heading “Camera Player 1” can be seen in the upper left side, which has various implications.

It is possible that the person playing the game is a play-tester or maybe even a random person and the seeming recording is for documentation purposes of the reaction of the player to the game or of the experience of playing it.

There is also another theory that the game could be a collaborative horror experience. Collaboration was one of the key aspects and themes of Death Stranding as well, and it could be possible that Overdose focuses on a collaborative horror experience as well, where multiple players shape the course of a gameplay session or the overall experience. It could be said that horror is completely different when experienced with others as opposed to when with others.

It is also entirely possible that this is not even a representative of the plans for the game but rather a proof of concept to gauge the reactions of players or development partners as well.

However, it can not be said with certainty that the game is a result of Kojima’s partnership with Xbox Game Studios, as they would surely bring the game to Xbox consoles at least but the game may arrive on consoles later.

As of this instant things are very uncertain as the title is clouded by much secrecy, in addition to the fact that Kojima Productions is currently busy with Death Stranding 2. One thing is certain, people are very excited to see Kojima’s take on the horror genre after the brilliant Silent Hills P.T demo.

We are not sure if this is precisely the same game that’s been making rumours, as we are not the ones to leak it, nor take any responsibility for the person recording the gameplay.
