I actually took this photo a few years ago and recently rediscovered it in my album. My grandfather had just passed away a few days prior.

In Chinese tradition, it is customary to send off the deceased with as much money, clothing, food, etc. as possible. This is done by burning representative joss paper or “ghost money.” In this specific instance, our family had pitched in for a big papier-mâché mansion to send along with my grandfather. We built this makeshift structure using spare scrap lying around the backyard and set fire to the mansion to create a wonderful blaze.

EDIT: u/FrankieWaterBottle thank you so much for the award! I am happy to share a piece of my culture along with this photo for everybody to enjoy for free. Nevertheless, I’m extremely humbled you thought highly enough of my post to gild it. I will be sure to pay it forward 😊

I see a man in the flame. . . On the left side, the tallest flame. . . Cool!

Can we talk about that flame and the shape. 🔥
