In your picture, are these the new buildings along Dostyk Av as you go south towards the Medeu complex? A lot of that area was under construction then. I used to live on Dostyk but further into town, by the plaza that has the Jambul monument past the Hotel Kazakhstan. Almaty was a pretty nice city then actually, although the polution could be a problem at times. I hope they have been able to address some of that (it certainly looks very clear in the picture). I certainly have pretty good memories of my stay there and travels through Central Asia.
