The leadership of Georgia is discussing about organising a nationwide referendum and ask the question: do the Georgians want a war with Russia?

Giorgi Kobakhidze, chairman of the party, made such a statement at a briefing in the office of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

“Let the people say whether they want to open a second front in Georgia against Russia,” Mr. Kobakhidze emphasized.

He promised that the authorities “will act as the people say.”

The politician expressed hope that the Georgian people “will bring clarity, whether he agrees with the statements of Ukrainian politicians about the need to involve Georgia in the war or with the position of the authorities of his country.”

This is how Irakli Kobakhidze responded to the statement of Fyodor Venislavsky, representative of the President of Ukraine in the Parliament, who advised Georgia “to take concrete steps to liberate Abkhazia and South Ossetia.”

Earlier, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov, as well as advisers to the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak and Oleksiy Arestovich, publicly addressed Tbilisi with similar advice.

“They all directly said that the opening of the second front in Georgia is highly desirable,” the head of the Georgian Dream recalled at the same briefing.

Georgian here. This referendum is for the government to show that the people don't want the war with Russia and that's why they (the government) are licking their boots. The truth is, they are proRussian fucks, but trying to keep playing EU/US too. After the war in Ukraine started, this has been rhetoric used by them to explain why 40k russian "tourists" have entered the country, but haven't left, why 3k of them managed to get citizenship, why are some of the restricted stuff getting to Russia thru our borders... Also the government claims that EU not giving us the cadidacy status is due to the fact that we didn't go to war with them, so this referendum will help them say that, yes they were worrying about people, and the people didn't want war, but the EU/US did.

EDIT: Let me add to this as many of you are asking and i might not be able to answer all of you. 1) About Russians entering the country, yes I know many of them are running from the repressions. Neither I nor most of the Georgians have anything against them. They are welcome to come and stay as long as they want. The problem is the Russians thet are coming to Georgia with imperialist rhetoric, who think that the war with the Ukraine is OK, that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are independent countries, that listening to the Georgian or Ukrainian music in the bar in Georgia is wrong. We have had war 14 years ago, that's not too far, so please understand why we might have problem with those Russians. 2) I am against war and don't think that we should return Abkhazia and South Ossetia with war. It's needles death, and would make living with them in hte future really awkward. But the rhetoric used by the government is too much. Almost every day there are some representatives of ruling party claiming that EU/US is trying to make us join the war. Hey look Congrasmen Kinzinger twitted how bravely Georgians are fighting in the ukraine - He wants us to join the war; Hey EU didn't gave us candidacy status, but gave to Ukraine and Moldova - Thats because we aren't in the war with Russia... The problem is the rhetoric here, not the fact that we want to join the war. We are not that big of a country, we are not next to EU, yes we remember 2008, but the making EU/US antagonists is wrong, and government using such rhetoric is quite easy to see whos game it's playing. 3) Just little more about propaganda machine - recently some piracy movie sites where georgians watch movies and Tv series were blocked (please note that those sites have been operating at least for 7-8 years and Ruling party has used them to put their advertisements when there were elections). Not to make story long, rhetoric - if you want EU, there is no pirate web sites for movies, you have to pay. Now there are talks about restricting importing cars, which are made earlier than 2013 due to some EU regulations, rhetoric - if you want EU, you have to buy newer cars...

In 2008, Russia occupied the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia (very much as Russia did again in 2014, when they occupied Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions). The referendum in Georgia is to see if the people of Georgia want to go to war with Russia over those territories.

I don't know the state of the Georgian army, but it's probably their best chance to recover their territories, given the state of Russia's armies.

I remember seeing Georgian soldiers leaving iraq to go fight at home poor bastards. If any time was good to try and retake what’s theirs now seems to be the time
