In 2004/2005 the building on the Blijmarkt was converted into an art museum to a design by architect Gunnar Daan. In 2012/2013 the building was spectacularly expanded with 'de Wolk' on the roof of the historic building.
The extension is a design by Hubert-Jan Henket (Bierman Henket Architects). A large oval window provides a view of the historic city center of Zwolle. On the outside, the superstructure is covered with 55,000 white-blue tiles from Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum. The extension is optically lifted like a ceramic cloud and floats above the original neoclassical building. On the border between the medieval city center and the 19th-century canals, the renovated museum is a contemporary beacon and an icon of the future. The Museum De Fundatie building was built between 1838 and 1841. Museum De Fundatie has been housed there since 2005. The museum closed in 2012. After a construction process of more than a year, Museum De Fundatie was reopened on May 31, 2013, but with a futuristic extension on top. He also did not like an underground extension.
