To confess: yes, I absolutely took a Sharpie to the wrong eye, and I think about it every day.
I got Smokey out of a dumpster in a small town in the mountains of southern Bulgaria when I was working there. He would follow me around outside of my apartment and always ran up to me for treats. He was the sweetest, most bad-ass looking kitten. (The vets think he was 3-4 months old at that time.)
On the first cold and snowy night, I brought him in “for the night, just to see how it goes.” No way could I leave him out there, even though I had no clue what to do. I ran to the grocery store for litter before it closed and read so many articles that night.
I wasn’t a real cat person at the time, but six years later, he lives with my in Colorado and I’m an insufferable cat person who has a “The Catfather” and “Purrride” t-shirt. I take him on walks every day. (Well, I follow him.) I chose an apartment specifically because it has 5 connected interior courtyards that he can go on supervised walks in.
He’s made me an utterly helpless cat person.
Lastly, as to his eye, he’s never batted…an eye. I’ve learned a lot from that. He doesn’t give a shit about his “disability” or what he looks like. It’s just who he is, a one-eyed pirate cat who’s moved halfway across the world.

As a Bulgarian I salute You for taking care of a disabled Bulgarian citizen. He looks like he is ready to dominate the neighborhood fauna. Good.
