I just remember being asked over and over about which leg was being operated on during surgery prep. It almost got to the point that I forgot myself.

For my knee replacement, the surgeon put a big red X on my left leg, a big black YES and his signature on the right leg.

After I was on the OR Table, the head nurse asked me again which leg. Just before they put me under, the Anesthesiologist asked again. He chuckled when my response was "You're asking now? The right knee."

Had to have surgery on my left ring finger a few years ago and didn't know about this policy or notice it at the time. Not until the doctor came to talk to me before they wheeled me into the OR and said "ok, right ring finger..." Or something to that effect to which I sort of snickered thinking he was just joking to get me to relax or such. Nope. They had marked on my hands with permanent marker that they were to operate on my right ring finger. Totally wrong. So thankfully they did a double/triple check before cutting. People make mistakes and I totally realize and understand that, but when they catch them and acknowledge it and correct it, I can't complain one bit.
