This sorta happened to my great grandma. Her husband died in 1977. They went ahead and prefilled in the head stone with her info and had an open ended death date 19XX. She died in 2003 just shy of her 101st birthday, so they had to correct the marker.
This was an issue in the late 1990s. People that paid for tombstones that were chiseled with 19, the last two numbers would be added at death. To think people bought tombstones decades before not thinking about the year 2000. Even in the 80's the year 2000 felt like a hundred years away.
