Modern fire departments are cool. Back when they existed as Privatized Entities they were super fucked up. A fun example is Crassus from roman times. Rome was very prone to fires, so you paid Crassus to have his people put out fires that happened in your home.
If you didn't pay Crassus his men also showed up, and then things caught on fire, and the fire didn't go out until you paid them.

Actually only property owners say that on occasion. Whenever theres a fire code violation I’m sure there’s been a time someone has said that
