They're called fairy rings, and there used to be much superstition around them.
They are caused by a fungus living underground, which provides additional nutrients and growth hormones to the grass on the edge of the fungal colony. At certain times of the year, when the fungus tries to spread spores, you will see mushrooms appearing all around the circle too, but only for short periods of time.

I had this too at a house and it wasn't a fairy ring. It was the lid to the septic tank.
