ALBERTSON, Nassau County (WABC) -- A woman died after she was attacked by a family dog on Long Island Wednesday.

Authorities said the attack happened on Terrace Court in Albertson around 1:15 p.m.

Police said a 70-year-old woman was discovered by her 66-year-old husband, mauled, mutilated and being dragged through the backyard of their home by the family pit bull.

Police responded and fatally shot the 7-year-old dog. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the officer who shot the dog was traumatized and is currently being treated at the hospital.

We're told the dog had belonged to the victim's step-son, who died in a motorcycle accident.

Police say they don't know why the dog turned on the woman.

An ex of mine and I were both animal lovers with a loving, kind, and stable home including healthy boundaries, excellent dog parenting, etc. We had a sweet, playful, loving pit bull and were part of the “these dogs are victimized! It’s the environment they’re raised in !!” BS chorus. She was the dog that changed a lot of our friends’ minds about pit bulls too- until she SNAPPED one day, 6 years in.

She attacked me and then viciously (including serious injury)started attacking other dogs, unprovoked. When she got in that mode, it was like she was a murderous robot and no commands, physical efforts at restraint worked on her. She became an animal we did not recognize as the dog we had raised.

I will never, ever own a pit bull, suggest owning a pit bull or go near a pit bull ever again. They have this attack trigger that cannot be predicted or planned for, and when it’s activated, they’re going for total takedown. It’s random and it can be lethal.
