For those curious:

He was aboard the USS New Orleans (the Ghost/Miracle Ship) before, during, and after Pearl Harbor.

He was a hero who faced hell at every turn, but he was mostly a kid that was in love with his girlfriend, hated the Navy, and missed home. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he promised her that he was ready to die for his country

We found some of my grandpa's WWII letters to my grandma as well. In the same box were my dad's letters to her when he was in the Navy in the early 70's. They were, uh, quite different than my grandpa's. Beautiful prose such as "THEY GAVE US ALL TONS OF SHOTS TODAY. RIGHT IN THE ASS. HURT LIKE HELL!"
