Lauren Boebert Says the Church Is Supposed To Direct the Government

A video of Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert has gone viral as she argues against the separation of church and state.

In a video that has now been viewed over 770,000 times on Twitter, Boebert argued the church should be advising the government.

Boebert made these comments while speaking to a Sunday crowd of people at the Cornerstone Christian Center in Basalt, according to a report by The Denver Post.

She went on to dismiss the idea that this was not what the founding fathers of America wanted.

“I’m tired of this separation of church and state junk.”

"The reason we had so many overreaching regulations in our nation is because the church complied," Boebert said.

"The church is supposed to direct the government. The government is not meant to direct the church. That is not how our founding fathers intended it.

"And I'm tired of this separation of church and state junk, that's not in the Constitution. It was in a stinking letter and it means nothing like what they say it does."

She then received a round of applause from the congregation.

The letter that Boebert refers to was written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists in 1802 where he calls for the separation of church and state.

It reads: "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declares that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between Church and State."

Boebert's comments have been discussed by political and constitutional experts, with one saying the issue of separation can be debated.

Richard Collins, a retired constitutional law professor at the University of Colorado Boulder spoke to The Denver Post and reflected on what she said.

"Like so many issues, you can debate it. It's not completely unassailable and that's what encourages people like Boebert go after it." Collins did add that there were legal precedents in the founding documents to bolster the separation, however.

Andrew Seidel of Americans United, an organization dedicated to the separation of church and state, dismissed Boebert's comments and argued against them.

"We are about to get a very brutal real-world lesson in what it's like to live in a country that doesn't have that separation, he told The Denver Post.

"That looks like conservative, white Christians as this privileged class and everybody else as these second-class citizens."

Newsweek has contacted Boebert for comment.

During her talk with the congregation, Boebert also said Donald Trump was chosen by God to be president of America.

She went on to praise the former President and gave him credit for the recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the landmark abortion ruling, Roe v. Wade.

"Glory to God. Think about that, 49 years of Roe v. Wade, 63 million children lost," Boebert told the small crowd.

"And because God called a man who was not a politician to run for office, and I believe that he was anointed for that position.

"He answered that call despite what other people were saying, despite all the negatives that they were listening and saying how unqualified he was, he said, 'I think I can do something good for this nation.' And three Supreme Court justices were installed," Boebert added.

"And now, five years from today, we can look back and see children running and laughing with smiles on their faces, going to school, children who would have not had the opportunity to live."
