I describe my astrophotography journey in this blog

Basically, learning how this stuff works is a huge learning curve. Taking photos of tiny objects outside of our turbulent atmosphere doesn't follow normal photography rules. The distortion that comes from atmospheric seeing causes all kinds of problems, and it must be overcome. The second set of photos were captured with a telescope that was only 1" larger, but was otherwise virtually identical to the first one. The difference was I knew how to watch for proper atmospheric conditions and knew how to leverage software in the right way to apply lucky imaging and sharpening algorithms to the data once it was captured, resulting in views that rival space telescopes.
