Fruit Fly is a huge problem in my region at the moment that the SA government are paying me plus 140+ more staff $36AUD($25USD) an hour to bait trees and clean up dropped fruit. Just to give you an idea on how seriously they take it.

Growing in a pest free zone means fruit can be exported quicker without the extra cost of needing to do the extra pest control steps or having fruit sit in quarantine for too long so the end consumer product is higher quality among other things. I would rather have a fresher orange instead of one that's been sitting in quarantine for several days.

Exporting from SA can gain up to A$250 per ton more then other states in Australia for fruit growers. The fear of having a bumper crop which is ready to harvest only too have it destroyed by Fruit Fly and all dumped is not nice and is also a fear of many SA growers if the Government cant get on top of any outbreaks.
